Bayern Munich has launched the Alphonso Davies Foundation to help provide youth sports programs.
The Canadian under-17 star set a record for most MLS goal in a single season for the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2015 and has made 18 appearances for Canada’s senior national team. He’s looking to go even further this time around.
“What we want to do, with the support of sponsors and corporate sponsors, is to open a sports program that helps kids be better citizens in themselves and in their neighborhood,” he said on the National Football League Network. “I feel, sometimes, we got the culture backwards. We have to bridge the gap between soccer and football. That’s the biggest thing that we’re looking to do, because if you are talking soccer and football, then hopefully we can have a better life. I want to see positive change.”
The launch of the new foundation was held at FIFA’s HQ and marks the first step in what Davies hopes will be a long-term program in Vancouver.
“I want to inspire kids to play and play competitively,” he said. “That’s my goal, to create change and make kids in Vancouver more developed, healthier and happier people.”
