The 49ers were making their second straight victory in season-opening Los Angeles Rams, and early season winless San Francisco controlled the tempo of a fierce contest for most of the game.

When you are 31 points down, you are kidding yourself if you think you are going to win. The 49ers did not get close to the Rams’ 45 points again.

The 49ers scored the most points ever in an NFL match, making them the highest scoring opening half of a season since they were 50-10 against Cleveland in 1960.

L.A. (3-1) were listless during an ugly second quarter, but regrouped to cause another one of those post-National Anthem angst-filled flashpoints.

After the PAT, the 51-3 lead, it was as if the NFL was back.

Now, the 49ers (1-4) have just two of their next three at home before a back-to-back road games at New Orleans (4-0) and Philadelphia (4-0).

Despite the win, at least the Rams winless season looks unlikely to last long after a post-NFL Anthem protest which saw Khaled Hamada left the locker room.

Matt Leinart, in his second stint as an NFL quarterback, starts at quarterback for the 49ers with Brian Hoyer, after he was dropped for a six-point deficit.
