A Cross Country Skiing Trip Through Maine’s Wilderness Travel to Portland’s Mount Desert Island near the western tip of the Appalachian Trail with night skiing on Prima Blanca Mountain in Acadia National Park, and hikers to climb to top of Mount Desert Island and ski to Squaw Peak near Galveston. Return to Portland on a ferry, take a 45-minute walk over the Misty Isles Bridge over the George P. Cowles National Seashore.
GETTING THERE • A ferry will run daily from Maine to the Island of Portland, from early November to mid-May, departing at 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. from Upper Mills Landing on Portland Harbor. • A trail car service offers land-to-forest treks in Mount Desert Island, some on road and some by road, highway or rail. A total of 72 days are booked for the 1,700-mile northern route, with an average daily rate of $50. A car can be booked for up to four people. For $82 per person per day (including car rental), there is a free shuttle in Acadia National Park to one of the world’s greatest playgrounds, the wilds of the Gondwana Ecological Reserve. • A short ferry ride takes hikers from Portland to Squaw Peak, the tallest mountain on the island.
